Synlogic’s proprietary pipeline includes Synthetic Biotics for the treatment of metabolic disorders including phenylketonuria and enteric hyperoxaluria. The company is also building a portfolio of assets in immunology and oncology.

Position Summary: 

Synlogic is seeking an experienced and talented USPTO registered Senior Patent Agent/Manager/Associate Director to join our R&D and Legal teams. The ideal candidate will help lead and drive our growing intellectual property portfolio. Reporting to the Chief Scientific Officer. The Senior Patent Agent will be an innovative and creative thinker who will work closely with our research and development teams to identify new inventions, draft new applications, and support prosecution of our existing portfolio. In addition, this proven leader will partner with our external counsel to help align R&D and IP strategy and strategize on aspects of patent prosecution. This broad role will involve all aspects of IP strategy and execution across our early- and late-stage development portfolio. 

The ideal candidate should have demonstrated skills in evaluating and identifying new discoveries and leading the effort from initial filings to worldwide patent issuance. In addition, the successful candidate should have a strong understanding of U.S. and foreign patent systems, including patent filing and prosecution processes, innovations review, patent searching, and landscape assessments. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Work closely with our research and development teams to identify new inventions, draft new applications, and support prosecution of our existing portfolio 
  • Ensure instruction is provided to researchers and inventors regarding legal requirements for a patentable invention  
  • Assist in construction of invention disclosures 
  • Manage outside counsel to maintain prosecution docket and implement strategies for our worldwide patent portfolio, with an understanding of budgets and R&D timelines  
  • Contribute to development and evaluation of intellectual property strategy 
  • Manage IP risks within the company’s pipeline and programs 
  • Contribute to IP due diligence for potential in-licensing and acquisition opportunities 
  • Conduct landscape and third-party portfolio assessments 
  • Review proposed publications and presentations for IP impact 
  • Provide counseling on patent and related IP matters to the company 
  • Advise on agreements with IP implications  
  • Maintain expertise in patent law and practice, especially related to areas relevant to the company’s science and platform 

Education and Skills Requirements: 

  • PhD in microbiology, microbial genetics, molecular biology, synthetic biology, or a related field is preferred, but candidates with an MS degree and relevant experience will also be considered 
  • A minimum of 8 years of IP experience in-house at a biotech or pharma company and/or at a law firm 
  • Registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office 
  • Familiarity with scientific and IP databases 
  • Demonstrated ability to grasp scientific and technical concepts quickly and the ability to communicate scientific findings to external counsel effectively 
  • Ability to collaborate, work independently, and balance competing priorities with a high level of professionalism and with the ability to reprioritize quickly and handle multiple projects simultaneously 
  • Ability to effectively communicate IP principles with scientists and technical experts and participate in research planning to generate supporting data for patent filings 
  • Excellent writing and analytical skills; ability to provide IP advice in a clear, concise manner, both verbally and in writing 
  • Deadline-driven
