Reporting to the Vice President of Hardware and Engineering, the Hardware System Engineer will develop the next-generation imaging system for the rapidly evolving spatial-omics field. In particular, the ideal candidate will play a key role in developing a novel and reliable fluidic subsystem to support the entire system development.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Project Management, Biology R&D, Consumables R&D, Software, Technical Support, Service, and other functions to ensure the successful launch and post-launch of MERSCOPE instrument, a new highly spatially multiplexed genomic profiling instrumentation platform
  • Lead the engineering efforts in conceptualizing, designing, and qualifying the fluidics handling system in the next Vizgen platforms
  • Support the development of product requirements for new products
  • Develop a system robustness strategy including monitoring, fault handling, and control systems
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment, interact with customers, as well as other scientists and engineers from a wide variety of backgrounds
  • Participate and collaborate with a diverse cross-functional team to design, develop, document, and analyze the overall architecture and requirements of the next-generation instrument, consumable or workflow products, which meet the needs of Vizgen’s product portfolio

Required Skills and Background:
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree with 10+ years of related work experience or Doctoral degree with 5+ years related industrial work experience
  • Experience with developing and integrating complex instrumentation systems for biotech applications (cell/genomics applications preferred) which incorporate mechanical/fluidics, optical, thermal, and firmware components
  • Strong knowledge of fluidics- and optics-based platforms for complex assays or biochemical processes is highly preferred
  • Experience in creating and testing new designs in CAD and optical simulation software and rapid prototyping and refinement
  • Experience with broad engineering and biological exposures, including but not limited to liquid handling system and its control, high-resolution optical imaging, molecular biology methods for nucleic acid applications, complex biological system integration, and workflow scripting automation
  • Demonstrated behaviors of a systems thinker who has the ability to select and apply appropriate systems thinking skills to solve problems and implement constructive change
  • Able to work closely with the Product Marketing team to define system requirements, plan activities, and contribute to budget of allocated project scope
  • History of executing at all phases of the product life cycle from product concept, design, development up to production
  • Basic programming skills such as Python for engineering data analysis is a plus
