Using a platform that leverages reproducible, modular approach to microbial engineering, Synlogic designs Synthetic Biotic medicines that target validated underlying biology to treat disease in new ways.

Synlogic’s proprietary pipeline includes Synthetic Biotics for the treatment of metabolic disorders including Phenylketonuria and Enteric Hyperoxaluria. The company is also building a portfolio of partner-able assets in immunology and oncology.

We are currently seeking a motivated individual with experience in strain engineering and synthetic biology to work on the discovery stage of new living medicine projects by contributing to strain engineering, metabolic optimization and strain characterization in collaboration with multiple functional groups within the organization.

This role represents a unique opportunity to drive the discovery and advancement of living medicines across our immunomodulation as well as metabolic diseases programs. The ideal candidate should be able to work independently, have a proactive nature regarding problem solving, and eagerly engage new technologies as needed to overcome scientific challenges.


  • Very strong in engineering E. coli or other microbes using common molecular biology tools with minimum supervision post-training
  • Characterize strains using available assays or by employing new ones
  • Be very proactive in troubleshooting to move projects forward
  • Understand synthetic biology and metabolic engineering concepts


  • BS in molecular biology, microbiology, or similar field with hands-on bench experience in academic, pharmaceutical, or biotech setting working on scientific projects.
  • Demonstrated strain engineering experience with E. coli or other organisms.
  • Expertise with routine microbiology and molecular biology techniques such as PCR, cloning, transformation. Familiar with Gibson assembly and type II cloning.
  • Familiarity with common biochemistry or cell based assays is a plus
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy and an ability to work independently
  • Ability to multi-task, accommodate flexibility and manage time effectively to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative, cross-functional environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
